Iranian President Signals Conditional Openness to Talks
Writing on social media on Tuesday, Pezeshkian explained that the instruction came “in light of requests from friendly governments in the region” that have encouraged Tehran to reply to a negotiation offer put forward by US President Donald Trump.
At the same time, the president underlined that any dialogue would depend on the creation of a “suitable environment” devoid of intimidation and “unreasonable expectations.”
He added that discussions must proceed strictly “within the framework of our national interests.”
A day earlier, sections of Iran’s domestic press reported that Pezeshkian had authorized the revival of nuclear talks with Washington, which had been suspended after the 12-day conflict with Israel in June 2025.
According to those accounts, negotiations might resume in the near future, possibly involving Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the US Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff.
Subsequently, the same media sources clarified that claims about an immediate restart of negotiations had not been confirmed. More recent reports suggest that Araghchi could meet Witkoff in Istanbul on Friday.
These developments unfold against a backdrop of intensified diplomatic maneuvering, as several countries in the region — notably Turkey — are reportedly attempting to reduce strains between Tehran and Washington.
