Kazakhstan Sets March 15 Date for Referendum on New Constitution

(MENAFN) Kazakhstan will hold a nationwide referendum on March 15 to decide the fate of a proposed new constitution, after President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree on Wednesday formalizing the vote.

The decree, published on the presidential website, sets the stage for a public decision on sweeping constitutional reforms unveiled earlier this week.

Voters will be asked: "Do you adopt the new Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the draft of which was published in the mass media on February 12, 2026?'"

Addressing a government session on Tuesday, Tokayev described the proposed charter as embedding "important progressive norms."

He stressed that approving the new basic law "will give a powerful impetus to the development of Kazakhstan and will help realize the potential of every citizen."

The reform initiative signals a structural shift in governance. Tokayev said the country is moving away from a "super-presidential form of government" toward a presidential republic featuring a strengthened and authoritative parliament.

The referendum marks a pivotal moment for Central Asia’s largest economy, as officials frame the constitutional overhaul as a cornerstone of broader political modernization efforts.
