Poland Faces Deadlock Over EU Defense Funding Legislation

(MENAFN) Poland’s government and president remain at an impasse over legislation to access EU defense funding, as talks stall and political uncertainty grows. The bill, designed to allow Poland to obtain over €43 billion ($50.7 billion) in low-interest loans through the EU’s SAFE (Security Action for Europe) mechanism, has hit a roadblock amid disputes over Senate amendments.

Sources indicate that President Karol Nawrocki doubts whether the lower house (Sejm) will approve the Senate’s changes, which were introduced by members of the ruling coalition.

Government officials say negotiations with the Presidential Palace have effectively stalled. “All substantive arguments have been exhausted. At this point, everything will be decided by politics,” a senior official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

The stalled talks raise concerns about a potential veto or procedural delays, shifting attention to parliamentary arithmetic and possible divisions within the governing majority. While the Sejm can overturn Senate amendments with an absolute majority, insiders say the final outcome is uncertain despite formal government support.
