Ranking Member Shaheen Leads Bipartisan Senators in Statement on Parliamentary Election Results in Serbia
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Dick Durbin (D-IL), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Chris Coons (D-DE) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) released the following statement with regard to Serbia’s October 25, 2026, parliamentary elections, which saw the highest turnout in Serbia since the breakup of the former Yugoslavia.
“On Sunday, October 25, the Serbian people made their voices heard loud and clear at the ballot box. The Student List is projected to win a decisive majority of seats in the parliament, and we congratulate them on the example they have set for a peaceful, grassroots democratic movement. We also welcome the ruling party accepting the clear results of the election, and we recognize the critical role of international and domestic observers during the campaign and on Election Day, whose efforts to ensure a free and open civic space strengthen trust in the electoral process.
“Now is a pivotal time for Serbia and its future. This election ushered many new voices into parliament from across Serbian society. The United States remains committed to supporting Serbia’s aspirations for European Union membership, its continued progress to strengthen its democratic institutions and efforts to advance normalization of relations with Kosovo. We stand ready to engage with the new parliament and encourage the swift formation of a government that can deliver on the priorities of the Serbian people.”
